Having treated elsewhere of God and of providence from a purely speculative point of view, we here resume the consideration of these great questions in their relation to the spiritual life. The primary object of contemplation is, in fact, God Himself and His infinite perfections, especially His goodness, His wisdom, and His providence. Our activity and our progress toward eternity must be directed from the higher plane of this contemplation. From this point of view we shall treat here (1) of the existence of God and of His providence; (2) of those perfections of God which His providence presupposes; (3) of providence itself according to the Old and New Testaments; (4) of a trusting self-abandonment to God's providence; (5) of providence in its relation to justice and mercy. May these pages instill in the minds of those who read them a better understanding of God's infinite majesty and the absolute value of the one thing necessary, our last end and sanctification. Their chief aim will be to insist on the absolute and supremely life-giving character of the truth revealed by our Lord Jesus Christ and infallibly proposed to us by the Church. Souls are perishing in the ever-shifting sands of the relative; it is the absolute they need. Nowhere will they find it but in the Gospel entrusted by Jesus Christ to His Church, which has preserved, taught, and expounded it. It has been exemplified in the lives of the best of her children.

There is a wealth of knowledge presented in this masterpiece by Father Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange. Before reading the book I assumed that the text would mostly be about our need to trust in divine providence and citations from the various spiritual masters on the question, while the book does contain this it also provides a strong theological foundation to build these later ideas upon by starting with a exploration of who God is, His Characteristics, the (Thomastic) proofs for his existence and a defense against many modern misconceptions of God (for example refutations of bad ideas like if God loves Himself that means He is selfish etc). This strong foundation the author lays down, (especially on how God moves us) makes the other part of the book dealing explicitly with trust in divine providence in our own spiritual life unfold easily. Those who desire examples from scripture will not be disappointed as he draws from both the Old and New Testament, those looking for citations from other great works on trusting in providence will find those works (and refutations of errors like quietism) woven into the text masterfully. If you are looking for practical advice in how to grow in the trust of divine providence or criticisms of modern banalities like the flippant "why worry" attitude he will not disappoint either.
All of this is presented in Father Reginald delightful kind and learned tone, although in this book he offers some rather firm and stinging critiques of those erroneous theories of God and His creation that wreck havoc upon modern minds. The book comes with a great index, making the book very useful for writing articles, homilies and the such like who need a reliable source to instruct others.
This is a wonderful book, and one that can greatly help restore peace to ones soul by foster loving confidence in God in the midst of this chaotic world. I give it my Highest possible recommendation.

Providence Reginald GarrigouLagrange OP Paul A Boer Sr 9781477583203 Books Reviews
Most post Vatican Council ll laity, probably never heard of Reginald Garriou-Lagrange, O.P. and only know of Thomas Aquinas as the "dumb ox" and G.K.Chesterton's brief monograph of him. Many probably think that "Modernism" refers to guitars at mass etc.
This book written for the layman, albeit one who wishes to devote some time and effort to understanding Thomas and mysticism in a Christian traditional context, will find that he is well served. Written by a profound thinker of the sacred for the profane reader it will answer many questions and spur one to further questioning.
Curiously, it inadvertantly helps to describe the battlefield that present day theologians are on. At the very least it will put some historical perspective into the theological conflicts that many attempt to win by either trivializing their thought e.g. Thomas Aquinas, or ST. John of the Cross, or ignoring it entirely, intellectually censuring or book burning, e.g. Fr. Reginald. While it does simplify many doctrines for the laity, it is not condescending.
As I implied before this is not light reading but important and rationally reasoned (talk about a redundant observation) thought presented for the layman. The e-book edition which I purchased was perfect and simple to navigate about. Remember this man taught the future John Paul ll and said of his thesis, "writes much, says little." Talk about a tough marker.
All of us often wonder in awe why such apparently bad things happen to good and innocent people. This superb book draws out that God in his infinite Wisdom allows evil to happen to his elect to refine the dross into Gold. The book of Job has new meaning and living out everyday life gives the reader new insights to God's inscrutable ways. The chapter on Prayer and Providence is truly life changing. He shows that the trials of the just serve a higher purpose and our salvation is more secure in God's hands than our own. You will be richly rewarded for this "Classic" read.
This work by Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange is more accessible than his work on Predestination. The two themes are somewhat related, but providence examines the meaning of God's sovereignty over all creation and history for us His creatures. The first two sections of the book are an examination of God's nature and perfections and how this necessitates His absolute control of all events, even the slightest or least significant. Because God is supremely good we can therefore have confidence in His providence and good will toward us. He quotes Bossuet who said we are much better off trusting our eternal salvation to God than trying to insure it ourselves. This should give the Christian much confidence and courage in the daily trials of life, knowing that all things work together for the good of those who love God.
The third, fourth, and fifth sections of the book deal specifically with providence
and its bearing on the spiritual life. Great emphasis is placed upon how God's justice and mercy are manifested through His providence and how both of these aspects of His nature join in bringing about our conversion and growth in grace. A trusting abandonment to God's providence is the key to our relationship with God as our loving Father.
While I enjoyed this work by Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange, it did not impress me as much as his work on Predestination. Much of what was said was covered already in that earlier work, but for those who would like something with less theological terminology, Providence is more reader friendly.
Truly an amazing book. Father make you feel at peace when he explains God's providence and how He has everything under His control. This book shows you what to do and how to act when giving your life up tp God's Holy Providence. The teachings in this book can be applied to anything in your life. Read it and be at peace. Highly recommended.
